JSON vs. YAML vs. XML: Picking a Config Format (and Converting Between Them)
All three can represent the same data. The differences that matter are about who's reading the file — a program, or a person.

The Same Data, Three Different Ways to Write It
A config file listing a name, a port number, and a list of allowed hosts can be written as JSON, YAML, or XML and mean exactly the same thing to whatever reads it. Which format you're using usually isn't your choice at all — it's dictated by whatever tool or API you're working with — but understanding what each one actually trades off makes it obvious why the ecosystem never converged on just one.
JSON: Built for Programs to Parse
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is minimal by design — objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and null, with strict syntax rules and no room for ambiguity. That strictness is exactly why it became the default for APIs and data interchange between programs: every mainstream language can parse it instantly, reliably, and with no configuration. The tradeoff is readability for humans — nested JSON gets visually noisy fast, with brackets and quotation marks around every key.
YAML: Built for Humans to Read and Write
YAML strips away JSON's punctuation in favor of indentation and plain text, which is exactly why it's become the default for configuration files developers hand-edit directly — Docker Compose files, CI pipelines, Kubernetes manifests. The readability comes at a real cost, though: YAML's flexible syntax has more edge cases than JSON's strict one, and indentation-sensitive parsing means a misplaced space can silently change what a file means rather than throwing an obvious error the way mismatched JSON brackets would.
XML: Built for Structure and Validation
XML predates both and is more verbose than either — every value gets wrapped in an opening and closing tag — but it brings capabilities neither JSON nor YAML natively has: attributes on elements (not just nested values), namespaces for combining vocabularies from different sources, and schema validation (XSD) that can enforce a document's exact structure before anything reads it. That's why XML persists in enterprise systems, some configuration formats (Android's layout files, for instance), and places where strict validation matters more than file size or readability.
Why You End Up Converting Between Them
In practice, the format isn't usually a preference — it's a requirement set by whatever you're integrating with. A legacy system emits XML, but the tool consuming it only accepts JSON. A config file needs to move from a YAML-based CI system into a JSON-based application settings file. Converting is less about picking a "winner" and more about translating the same data across a boundary where each side has already committed to a different format.
