Is FileCast actually free?
Yes. Every tool is free to use, with no hidden tiers, no "free trial" period, and no credit card required at any point. FileCast is supported by on-page advertising rather than by putting basic conversions behind a paywall, so there's no artificial cap designed to push you toward a paid plan — there is no paid plan.
Do you upload my file to a server?
For most tools, no. The majority of FileCast's converters — image, PDF, and text tools included — run entirely inside your browser using JavaScript, so your file never leaves your device. A small number of tools that need more processing power than a browser can offer are labeled "Cloud" instead of "Local" on their tool page; those do send your file to our server for the conversion, but it's deleted immediately afterward. Check the badge at the top of any tool page to see exactly which mode that tool uses.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Every tool works fully without signing in — no email, no password, nothing to set up first. Creating a free account is optional and only unlocks a few conveniences: your favorite tools stay pinned, your last 30 days of conversions are listed (never the files themselves), your preferred settings are remembered across devices, and every tool's file-size limit doubles.
Is there a file size limit?
Yes, and it's listed directly above the upload box on each tool's page — most browser-based tools sit in the tens-of-megabytes range, since that processing happens on your own device's hardware rather than a server. Signing in with a free account doubles whatever limit a tool normally has.
What happens to my file after I convert it?
It depends on the tool's processing mode. For the browser-based ("Local") tools — most of them — nothing happens to your file anywhere else, because it was never sent anywhere: it exists only in your browser's memory for the length of the conversion and is gone once you close or navigate away from the tab. For the small number of server-based ("Cloud") tools, the uploaded file is converted and then deleted from our server immediately — there's no multi-day retention window, just an upload, a conversion, and a deletion.
What do the green and blue badges mean?
Every tool page carries one of two badges near the top, showing how that tool actually processes your file. Green ("Local") means the conversion runs entirely in your browser — your file is never uploaded anywhere. Blue ("Cloud") means the file is uploaded to our server for processing, then deleted immediately afterward.
