What Is PDF Page Numbers?

This tool stamps a page number onto every page of a PDF, in the position, starting number, and format you choose. It's useful for PDFs that were exported without page numbers, or assembled from multiple sources that each had their own numbering — or none at all.

Page numbers make a document easier to navigate, reference, and keep in order once it's printed. "See page 14" only means something if page 14 is actually labeled.

Why Add Page Numbers?

Long documents are hard to reference without them. A printed report with loose pages is easy to reorder by mistake if nothing marks their sequence. A document reviewed collaboratively, with comments like "on page 7, we should…", needs consistent numbering for that feedback to make sense to everyone reading it.

Page numbers also help confirm a document is complete — if the last page reads "42 of 42," you know nothing is missing.

How This Tool Works

This tool runs entirely in your browser. When you drop a PDF onto the page, choose a position, starting number, and format, your device stamps the numbers onto every page locally, in your device's memory. Your file is never uploaded to any server. The numbered PDF is ready to download in seconds.

Adding Page Numbers Here vs in the Original Document

Page numbers can be added either in the source document before exporting to PDF, or directly onto an existing PDF. Here's how the two compare.

Works on PDFs assembled from multiple sourcesYes, numbers the whole thing consistentlyOnly if each source is renumbered individually first

Use This Tool When

  • You only have the final PDF, not the original document
  • You've merged pages from several files and need one consistent numbering scheme
  • You need a quick fix without reopening whatever software created the original file

Consider the Original Document When

  • You still have the source file and expect to make other edits too
  • The document is one you'll re-export from that source repeatedly, where built-in page numbering will keep working automatically

Common Scenarios for Adding Page Numbers to a PDF

Preparing Reports for Printing

A printed report without page numbers is easy to reorder by accident, especially once it's out of its original binder or folder. Adding numbers before printing keeps the pages easy to put back in order if they're ever shuffled.

Numbering Merged Documents

Combining several PDFs into one packet — a proposal with appendices, a case file with multiple exhibits — often means each original file had its own numbering, or none. Adding a single consistent numbering pass afterward makes the combined document readable as one whole. Our PDF Organize tool is useful for getting the page order right before numbering, and printed handouts of the finished packet are often easier to track at events with a scannable code from our Barcode Generator.

Creating Handouts for Meetings or Events

Printed handouts that reference "turn to page 3" only work if page 3 is labeled as such. Numbering the pages before printing avoids confusion during the meeting itself.

Formatting Manuscripts or Long-Form Documents

Manuscripts, theses, and other long documents typically need page numbers for citation and navigation, sometimes with a specific starting number (skipping a title page, for example). Custom start numbers make that straightforward.

Finalizing Legal or Contractual Documents

Contracts and legal filings often need every page numbered for reference in signatures, exhibits, or amendments. Consistent numbering also makes it easy to confirm no pages are missing before the document is signed or filed.

Other Ways to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

You can also add page numbers using Adobe Acrobat's Header & Footer tool, or your word processor's built-in page numbering before exporting to PDF. FileCast is useful when you only have the PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to add page numbers to my PDF here?

Yes. This tool processes your file entirely in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to any server — everything happens locally on your device.

Can I choose where the page numbers appear?

Yes. Pick from six positions — bottom or top, each aligned left, center, or right.

Can I start numbering from something other than 1?

Yes. Set any starting number, which is useful for documents where a cover page or table of contents shouldn't count as page 1.

What formats are available?

Three: a plain number ("1," "2," "3"), "Page 1," "Page 2," and so on, or "Page 1 of 12" style numbering that also shows the total page count.

Will this overwrite page numbers that are already in my PDF?

It adds a new set of numbers on top of the existing page content — it doesn't detect or remove numbers that were already part of the document. If your PDF already has numbers baked in from its source, check the result to make sure the two sets don't overlap or conflict before using it.
